The Yoke and Arrows were the symbols of Isabel and Ferdinand, whose marriage in 1469 unified Catholic Spain and was to lead to the expulsion of the Moors in 1492. The Fascist Falange Espanola, one of the leading Nationalist factions during the Civil War of 1936 – 39, adopted the Yoke and Arrows as their banner.
The poems trace the sequence of events that took place in Granada in the early weeks of the war, leading to the assassination of Federico Garcia Lorca. They also illustrate the parallels between the atrocities and acts of retribution of those weeks with the violence and cruelty of the Reconquista and other periods of Spain’s history.
‘The poems are beautifully realised, burning like the Spanish sun into memory’ – Moyra Donaldson
The reading will be enhanced by the musical performance of guitarist Rikki Thomas-Martinez, who studied for many years in Madrid with one of Spain’s leading gypsy flamenco masters.
The event starts at 7.30pm and costs £6 or £4 concessions. Tickets available from the Lantern Theatre online Box Office or on 0114 255 1776.
‘truly moving… a mature tour de force’ – Damian Smyth
